There has been some discussions in various places about dashes and underscores (or underlines as I call them). By this I mean - and _ when they are used in search engine optimisation. This has all come about because of what Matt Cutts of Google recently said. As I undertstand it he said that Google are 'looking at' making underscores as word seperators. Not that they had already done so.
Has all of this any relevance? Well it has in a way because at the moment an underscore is not treated as a space in Google searches etc., whereas a dash is.
If, for example, you were to enter into a Google search money-making-mission you will get different results to money_making_mission. The reason being that in the first entry this will be looked at as the same as money making mission whereas with the second instance Google will see this as moneymakingmission.
All of this means we have to be a little careful when we choose URL's or when using dashes and underscores in words we consider keywords. At the present time if we want words to be seperate we must use a dash, but an underscore if we want the words combined.
Matt Cutts also wrote about this on his own blog back in 2005 with a post Dashes vs. Underscores.
Little points like this can make a difference to the number of search engine referrals we receive.
Good luck,
Mike.
