Rush is the right word. Everywhere I look I seem to come across BlogRush.
I'm being told over and over that it's 'the fastest and easiest way to instantly drive a flood of targeted readers to your blog - absolutely free!'
But how do the writers know this?
The truth is they don't. They are just jumping on the latest craze and mustn't miss out.
Some big names are on board including, I thought surprisingly, ProBlogger - though with a few reservations.
Okay, here's my pennyworth. Call it what you want but it's a multi-level scheme, some would say a pyramid. One of the enticements is that it goes down ten levels.
10 levels! Wow!! How many people would this be all helping you get traffic?
Reality check: The majority of people in such schemes never reach ten levels.
Then there is the pure mathematics of such a plan. You know the sort of thing - if everyone gets five people on 10 levels you would need xxxxxxxxxx people. But then you have to remember that those xxxxxxxxxx each need people ... and so it goes on until everyone on the planet needs to have a blog.
Of course BlogRush disagree with this and, in fairness, this is what they say about it being a pyramid.
'Anyone that is saying this doesn’t understand how BlogRush works…
EVERY SINGLE IMPRESSION GETS REWARDED FOR *THAT* IMPRESSION AS IT HAPPENS. There is no promise of future rewards based on referral activity today. Each and every impression of the widget (and impression of the 5 headlines per widget) is rewarded AS IT HAPPENS. And when all the math is said and done, it also leaves 1 out of every 10 headline spaces left-over for BlogRush to use to monetize the service.'
So that's their opinion, capital letters and all.
With any pyramid, and it is a pyramid (though not a dodgy one where money changes hands), it's the early birds - the big guys - who do well. The promoters ensure this.
I'll do a forecast. Soon there will be success stories, about BlogRush, on blog posts by a 'Bob BigBlogger' (no, not the real name!). These will then be picked up by smaller blogs who will repeat the story within their own posts, as proof that it all works just great. And a buzz will be created.
Some bloggers will be left scratching their heads and wondering why their flood hasn't happened?
Let's look at a different angle and the case of ProBlogger. On September 19th he wrote that his 'headlines have been shown around 70,000 times'.
"Wow!" you might say, "This proves it does work."
But, and there's always a but, out of this he only had 35 clicks to his blog. That's a Click Through Rate of a 'measly' 0.05%. You wouldn't be happy if you only got this with an affiliate program or even AdSense.
"But it's still extra traffic," you might argue, "even if not a flood."
Yes, but ProBlogger is a big guy, he gets something like 6,500 hits a day on his blog anyway. Most other bloggers aren't going to get no where near the number of 'headlines' he gets. That's not being negative, it's a reality. He has the ability to introduce a lot of people into BlogRush from amongst his followers.
Now look at the BlogRush widget.
Partly the failure of the limited clicks is because the widgets aren't, in the majority of cases, being given a good position on blogs. The design isn't very good either - just my opinion obviously. If they are stuck at the bottom of a page, as an after thought, they aren't going to be noticed to any worthwhile degree.
One point I would make: If you are with BlogRush put a lot of thought into your 'headline' that will be shown on these widgets. Some I've seen won't get clicked in a Month of Sundays. ProBlogger has written some other tips here.
Okay, I'll stop there!
I feel with all programs like BlogRush we should adopt the attitude of my friend Matt on Blog About Your Blog.
He writes, "Before I posted about 'how great Blog Rush is' I wanted to know more about it. Why post about 'how much traffic you can get' with Blogrush if you don’t even know yourself?" Spot on!
Facts not hype is what we need.
Good luck!
Mike.
