Yesterday my new blog, Celebrity Insider, had over 500 visits and 400+ the day before. Though I was pleased about this, as the blog has only been going for nine days, I asked myself - why?I hadn't actually followed any of the supposed rules. I hadn't promoted the new blog, other than on MMMM and a couple of other links, hadn't submitted it to any directories, hadn't left the link on forums etc. etc.
For some reason though I got a healthy number of visits, and the majority of hits came via search engine referrals and tags.
After a bit of head scratching I came up with the fact that, with a niche blog, you have to post about whatever is going to be hot - not necessarily something that is already hot.
I'm talking about blogs from which you hope to make some money with. Obviously if money isn't the object just enjoy and write about whatever you want.
If the niche blog is about dogs, for example, you have to ask, and find out, what's going to be hot in the doggie world. This has to be preferably something new and maybe innovative. It's no good reporting on something that's been going for ages and with which the Internet is already flooded with information.
If something is new and on the way up get in quickly. Otherwise it's a bit like trying to get success with a Paris Hilton post - there is too much competition for a newish blog to compete with. The established websites have it sown up with the search engines. Sure you can make headway into this sort of 'market' but it'll take time and lots of good inward linking keywords and so on.
With something new you have a chance, an opportunity to get on the Google first page as long as you ping and tag.
Don't follow what everyone else has done. Discover some new stories and 'things' on the way up. It may be the way to success with a new blog.
Good luck,
Mike.
