No that's not true. What I'm thinking about today are the 'friends', 'communities', 'favourites' etc. that are on all forms of Internet social communities from MyBlogLog to myLot, Ciao, forums and so on.
All have places where you can nominate friends and be nominated yourself. It's a great idea but so many bloggers seem to be on ego trips of attracting so called friends and nominating hundreds and hundreds of new names themselves.
Someone wrote, "I've now got over 1000 friends."
So what!?
There are even link trains. Most are on a 'you nominate me and I'll nominate you' basis. So you end up with great big lists being circulated - but why? For what purpose?
Some say it's because lots of favourites or friends will get you into various Top Ten type lists and this produces referrals. The fact is though that not everyone can get into a top list, most won't come anywhere close. The initial train driver might, of course - mmmm!
Regarding the blogger who mentioned his thousand friends. It's a pity his blog's daily visits didn't reflect this dubious achievement.
Of course, they aren't real, genuine friends are they? It's another one of these cosmetic statistics that so many seem to enjoy. No harm in that. The Internet should be about real freedom to express ourselves and to do whatever we want. No rules apply. But ...
But, wouldn't it be better of we worked the whole friends idea properly so that we could all derive proper benefit from the process.
In the real world, if we have friends, what do we do?
We keep in touch and we visit them.
And shouldn't this be the same with Internet friends? An example: On myLot I'm supposed to have over 100 friends. But if I start a new discussion on that website sometimes hardly anyone visits. Some friends they are!
What we should surely do, is nominate only a few friends to social networks, a manageable amount - and then visit these regularly. Now that would be good wouldn't it? Regular visits to our articles, blogs, discussions, or whatever else is involved with the social group concerned. It would have to on a proper two way basis.
Or should we continue the frenzied accumulation of friends regardless ... perhaps there are a few 'hidden' benefits in doing so ...
