I see that Yahoo have published the Top Searches for 2008 for various categories.I often generally look at such lists - though prefer things like Google Trends - to find out what the hot searches are. I base some of the posts on my Celebrity blogs on Trends. Here is Yahoo's 2008 Top Ten

The above shows how celebrities dominate the Internet, whether we like this or not. And, as I often write, we have to give people/readers what they want as opposed to what we think they may or should want. Keeping up with trends means more traffic - and there is even more traffic (and money making potential) if we can anticipate something about to happen or hone in on something on the way up.
Google have a list of Top Ten Product Searches. Again this allows us to promote what people are searching for and want - as opposed to what we think they may want.
