As you will have gathered from my blog's posts I do not consider myself to be an expert on the Internet, Blogging, Programming, SEO etc. etc. My business knowledge comes from outside of the Internet. I can tell you about selling face to face, mail order, publishing magazines, management and a few other bits and pieces but with blogging I'm learning as I go along. So what I write about is my experience and how I see 'things' since I started this blog.
Keywords Bring Search Engine Referrals
Okay, I say that Keywords are important because they help bring referrals from search engines.
With most of my recent posts, as well as trying to put over whatever message I'm trying to say, I am also conscious of using what I consider to be my Keywords - which are relevant to this blog - several times.
Doing this, reasonably seriously over the last couple of months, seems to have paid off in that I am getting more search engine referrals - you may have noticed this from my Money Making Weekly Reports. These are the number of search engine referrals over the last six weeks:
143 ... 174 ... 183 ... 186 ... 293 ... 367
As you will see the numbers are increasing nicely. This current week I seem to be averaging 60+ per day.
I therefore assume, from this, that Keywords are indeed important for bloggers wanting more referrals from search engines. I'm sure that the 'experts' will tell you that there is more to it than this, and there probably is, but for this post I'm concentrating on just Keywords.
So what are my Keywords? As these are only relative to this blog I'll show you:
Now if you were to simply put my top Keyword money into Google I wouldn't be seen. There are too many bigger websites for me to compete (at the moment!). If, however, you enter Mikes Money all of the 10 entries shown will either be directed to this blog or about this blog.
Now last time I mentioned this an 'expert' mocked me saying: "Who on earth is going to Google Mikes Money?" But people do! You'll see that Mike and Mikes are both entered on the above list. So much for experts.
Find Associated Keywords
If you Google myLot Money or Helium Money this blog will come out either first or second. There are also other examples I could give but I don't want to bore you too much! This isn't meant to be boastful but simply to show a way of using Keywords to your advantage.
Concentrate on several that are relative to the main theme of your blog. If your blog is about dogs - dog would be your main Keyword - as mine is money. You therefore need to decide words to run along side your main dog word. I don't know what these would be: fleas? collar? walk? You have to decide.
Once you have decided use the words in your posts perhaps four or five times and where possible within your title. Be careful not to overdo this, however, search engines are a bit touchy about anything that appears to be spam. So no long lists of Keywords.
Use The Plural
I would recommend that wherever possible you use the plural (if this is simply made by adding an 's'). In my example use dogs. This is because, as I understand it, if people search dogs they'll get the word dog as well - but not necessarily the other way round. If a search is for dogs you don't always get results for dog. This is why both Mike and Mikes are shown to be searched and are included in my Keywords.
Write About What's Hot
When thinking about what to write about in your posts think about what might be 'hot' at the moment. Is there something new about the main theme of your blog? Hot subjects get Googled.
As an example: One of my hot subjects at the time of writing this is the Wealth Toolbox. Again I'm in number one position with my post Money Making Test: A Warning About Wealth Toolbox. Wealth Toolbox is being searched because people are wondering if it's a genuine money making opportunity - it isn't by the way! I'm getting quite a bit of traffic via the mentioned post.
Keep up to date with your own blog theme and write posts relevant to new things or what's being talked about on forums.
To get good search engine referrals there are other things to consider besides Keywords: Page Rank, Links, Tags, Pings and so on but Keywords do make a difference, in my experience, if you are conscious of them, and give consideration to them, when you write posts.
Good luck,
Mike.![]()
