Mike's Top Ten Blog Referrers

I'm carrying on with the subject of visitor referrals and have combined this with some link love. The following are the ten blogs that have sent me the most referrals this year - for which I thank them.

MIKE'S TOP TEN BLOG REFERRERS

1. Kumiko's Cash Quest
KumikoLeading the way is Kumiko who is on a (very pink) quest to make money online. At the moment there is a prize of $100 up for grabs, on her blog, with a Cash Quest Competition. Put on your sunglasses and go take a look.

2. Blog AboutYour Blog
BAYB isn't about money making but it's a place where 'good quality bloggers come together and collaborate on one big project.' BAYB is always looking for more bloggers' contributions. The benefits? This is what they say: 'Blog about your Blog is a good blog to be apart of as you can generate traffic, get readers, and share our ideas. When you blog with us you can build links to your site and articles.' So whatever your blog is about take a trip to BAYB land and enjoy.

3. The Million Dollar Experiment
Rob is on the other side of the world to me in New Zealand and was one of the first blogs to link to this one. It's about money making and to quote Rob: 'The idea is to let a million dollars manifest itself for you, by simply declaring it and thinking about it. Letting the universe provide it for you basically!' From this don't get the idea that he is just sitting back waiting. He's pro-active and you can read some of the ways he is making extra cash.

4. JCM's RPG Art
JulioFrom Brazil and absolutely nothing about money. The latest drawing shows: 'One of the powerful Tzimisce lords visting New York, Theodore Tholmes is the most famous and influential artist among the Tzmisce clan, and also one of the strongest vampires of the Sabbat. Nobles pay up to $50,000 each to watch him hunt humans, vampires or werewolves, torture then sculpt them into grosteque pieces of art.' Julio is one talented man.

5. The Gospel According To Rhys
Again not a money making blog but if you explore his blog you will find three excellent posts on Getting Easy Beer Money from Blogging . Rhys is from Colwyn Bay in Wales and writes, 'I am also a Geek, Loud and Proud. I probably wish I was more of a geek, but beer gets in the way, and I don’t really like coffee.'

6. Hipsterpad
Hipster KristelThis one isn't about money either. Just goes to show that referring blogs don't have to be necessarily of a similar theme. So what's Hipsterpad all about? It's your source for all things hip. Articles include such things as: The 10 Hippest Pick-Up Lines, Is Jesus A Hipster?, Hip To Be Hopeless In Hollywood.

7. Money Money Money
Guess what? This ones about money. It's written by an anonymous 'British female who's interested in earning and saving money. This blog is an attempt to share with others things I've learnt.'

8. Rate My Blog
From the UK and it's all about 'blog reviews, ratings, resources and the best blogs'. They go on to say: 'Authors can submit their blogs for review and get valuable feedback, or get an ego boost when their blog makes it into the top ten!' So pop along and get your blog reviewed.

9. Make Money At Home
I suppose the title says it all. The aim is to: 'Make money at home with your computer and build your own affiliate business online.'

10. The 15000 Dollar Mission
And finally, from the same man as in number 4 position - I told you he was talented, this blog is full of good quality posts on money making. Julio is out to make $15,000 and he is trying a lot of ways to get there.

That's my Top Ten Blog Referrers. Now all you have to do is visit them all!

Good luck,
Mike.

P.S.
Charley UcheaYesterday I mentioned the TV program Big Brother (no, don't groan) and Charlie Richardson. It seems the Sun newspaper got it wrong, her name is Charley Uchea - that's her photo on the right. They were correct though about her liking for footballers. The Daily Star writes that she has had 'a string of football star lovers'. She is the cousin of Manchester United midfielder Kieran Richardson. So now we all know.

Technorati Tags And Big Brother

Further to yesterday's post I just wanted to enlarge slightly on what I said about Technorati Tags.

Firstly the words used for the tags need to be such that people would actually want to search for them. If you use a couple of words together (as one tag) it's no good putting a good keyword with something obscure, which I have seen. It's better to use the one keyword by itself.

My main point, or argument, is that if you stick to a set amount of tags (categories) you will miss out on possible referrals.

For example my blog might have main categories of: Money, Affiliates, Advertising etc., which is fine, but I would then have missed out on a lot of visitors from tags such as:

Konnie Huq - http://technorati.com/tag/Konnie+Huq - which produced 111 Technorati tag referrals.

Plus other tags such as Kate Middleton, WealthToolbox, zlio, Treasuretrooper, YouGov, mybloglog, Bloggers choice awards, blog directories, Helium etc. etc. All of which would not have been used if I stuck to a fixed set of main categories - and this would have meant a few hundred less visitors.

Tags In Action
Lets try and give an extreme, exaggerated example of how tags, not relevant to the main categories of this blog, may help bring visitors. I won't comment as to the value of such hits - though I believe there are benefits, but that's a whole separate discussion.

Big Brother, Davina McCall, Dermot OLearyThere is no denying that the best tags are going to be what's 'hot' in the news. I've looked through todays UK newspapers and there doesn't seem to be anything that's particularly sizzling. I'll therefore go for the Big Brother 08 programme that starts on UK television tonight, hosted by the awful Davina McCall.

After the controversy of Big Brother 07 there's bound to be lots of unpleasant contestants, plucked from obscurity and seeking fame.

The Sun Newspaper claims that one of the people to be Big Brother house bound is Charley Uchea, cousin of the footballer Kieran Richardson. I can't believe I'm writing this!

Anyway, Charley Uchea is an attractive girl (there is a copyright photo here showing her half naked) and the Sun says, 'she is believed to have had a string of flings with top Premiership (soccer) players.' Now there's a surprise!

Okay that's enough Big Brother!

For Tags we'll include: Big Brother, Davina McCall, Charley Uchea.

We'll now see what happens.

I'm sure all of you UK readers will be glued to your TV tonight watching Big Brother. Me? I'll be watching The Apprentice.

Good luck,
Mike.

Technorati Tags Bring Referrals

My biggest referrers of visitors, to this blog, are the Google search engine and Technorati.

There's lots of info about SEO (Search Engine Optimisation) but I feel that the benefits of Technorati, especially tags, are sometimes overlooked.

A tag is simply a word, or maybe two or three, which categorise your blog posts (or videos and photos).

Now the strange thing is that many of the 'experts' that I have read say that you shouldn't have too many tags (categories) for your blog. You should limit these, they inform us, to a few subjects relative to the main subject matter of your blog.

I disagree with this entirely.

I've used well over 100 tags, or labels as they are called on Blogger, and I'm sure the list will get much longer. The reason why I use so many?

It's because tags bring Technorati referrals.

You therefore need, in my opinion, lots of them to cover all of the main points of what you have written about in your post. For example if you mention someone famous tag their name.

If you limit the number of tags, that you are willing to use, or have some predetermined ones that you stick to, you are limiting the potential number of visitors that you could get from Technorati. At least, that's how I see it.

"But if you use lots of tags (categories) on your blog this looks unwieldy and confusing," you might say.

Maybe, but it's not necessary to show all of these on your blog if you don't want to. There are ways to simply list the categories relative to the main subjects of your blog. For example, click on a tag to get the URL for the category and put this in your blog's side column. Leave out the ones not particularly relevant.

Personally I regard tags as second in importance to keywords.

For those that may not know tags are easy to use. With Blogger you simply list your chosen tags in the box marked 'Labels for this post' at the foot of each post before you publish them. That's it! Make sure though that your blog settings say 'Yes' to 'Send Pings'. (To check this go to 'Settings', click on 'Publishing' and then look at 'Send Pings' - this should be on 'Yes'.)

If your blog host doesn't allow you to do this as standard go to Using Technorati Tags which will give you the full info on what to do - and it also saves me explaining it all!

In saying all of this I am presuming, of course, that you are a Technorati member. I'm sure you are!

So that's my theme for today: tags. Use them to get visitors to your blog.

Oh and another bonus to using tags is that tagged posts often appear quite high in Google search results plus some of the other search engines also recognise tags.

Good luck,
Mike.

How Do You Cure A Statsoholic?

Help! I think I'm turning into a statsaholic.

It's a public holiday today in the UK and therefore a family day for me. I've squeezed a little free time at the moment and what am I doing? Looking at my blog stats.

There was a time when I wrote that statistics didn't really bother me as long as I was moving towards my own objectives.

But today I've discovered that eight out of my last 25 visitors have come from China - that's 32%! Guess it's not a holiday over there.

And 50.4% of todays visitors have arrived via search engine referrals and 26.5% from links on other blogs/websites. Fascinating!

Oh yes, and further to my post about offsite clicks 79.6% of visitors left this blog by clicking on one of my links. This is a 19.1% improvement on when I wrote that post. So perhaps the 'action' I took is working.

So what do all of these stats mean?

Well, not a lot really. All that really matters, on a money making blog is how much money has been made. Ah, but perhaps the stats can help ...

Goodness knows. I'll get back to my family now. I'm sure my son will be fascinated when I tell him all about my blog stats. Must have a word with him though, he's got a definite glazed look in his eyes recently - much like my wife has. Most odd.

Hope you've had a good Bank Holiday Monday.

Good luck,
Mike.

Making Money Worldwide

Advertorial.

I was reading Darren Rowse's post Where Do Your Readers Come From and I thought I'd take another look at where my visitors originate.

I was quite surprised to see that I have now had visitors from 136 different countries worldwide. I must admit that some of them I couldn't actually place on a world map. I guess this shows that the whole world wants to make money and that we need, therefore, something to promote that will span the globe.

So what appeals to everyone, of all nationalities? Friendship!

Based on this asumption, here's a list of all sorts of friendship sites that you can join for free.

But, better still, for one sign up - again for free - you can promote all of the sites to your worldwide visitors and make money from them.

Amigos - Personal Ads
Asian Friends
Big Church Christian Friends
French Friends
Filipino Friends
German Friends
Italian Friends
Indian Friends
Jewish Friends
Korean Friends
Passion - Romance
Senior Friends
Worldwide Friends

Adult Sites (over 18's)
ALT - Alternative Interests
Adult Friends Worldwide
Bondage
Cams.Com
Gay Friends
Lesbian Friends

To make money from any of the above, and a few more besides, simply click here.

You can promote just one or two of the sites, on your blog, or all of them. The choice is yours. Either way there is potential to make money from all of your worldwide visitors.

Money Making Clicks

To make money we need to get visitors to click on our blog's ads and links which have the potential to make us a few pounds or dollars. It would be an ideal world if we could control this, but I guess we can't.

We have to be content with trying to get as many offsite clicks as we can. I was looking at a few statistics today and I saw that 60.5% of yesterday's visitors clicked on something or other to leave this blog (i.e. offsite clicks). If this is considered good, bad or indifferent compared to others I have no idea and it doesn't particularly concern me.

What does concern me is:

(1) that 39.5% didn't click on an outgoing link. Though, you never know, perhaps they are still, even now, reading the blog!

Of course, not all offsite clicks are necessarily money makers. Some may be to other blogs I have exchanged links with and all sorts of other places. I'd still like to think, though, that visitors leave the blog by clicking on a link.

(2) The other thing that concerns me is that perhaps readers will go elsewhere prematurely before they have finished seeing everything that this blog has to offer.

To get round this I am now starting to make my links open in a new browser window. This way the clicker will see my blog again if he/she doesn't find the site they have gone to is of value. Otherwise the danger is that they may go off surfing never to be seen again.

To those that don't know how to force a page to load into a new browser window it is very easy to do. Simply use TARGET="_blank" after the links URL address.

So my thinking today is devoted to getting more offsite clicks - without resorting to any underhand tricks or incentives. If anyone has any suggestions or ideas they would be most welcome.

.................... Link Love ....................

I usually give a few links on Fridays to other blog posts I have found interesting. Because of my holiday I've had lots to catch up on so I'll leave this to next week.

beer moneyHowever I will mention three posts that Rhys has published as they may be of interest if you haven't seen them. They are entitled: Getting Easy Beer Money From Blogging.

The link is to the first of the three posts, you can follow the others on his blog.

Rhys has self styled himself as the Two Hundred Dollar Blogger and he writes about ...

'... the methods I use to try and get a little extra cash from this here blog. If you’re skint, I do recommend trying these, as they’re very little work (as you’re already blogging), but could get a bit of cash in your back pocket.'

Go take a look. There's no hype, just a genuine bloke's way of making some extra money with his blog.

Good luck,
Mike.

Money Making Thinking Caps

thinking capA money making bloggers job is never done - there are the emails to answer, a blog post to write, research to do, other blogs to visit, return comments to update .....

Stop!

We also need time to think.

It's so easy to get carried away with the usual chores of a blog that we can forget to purposefully think about different aspects of blogging.

What happens is that we do the same thing over and over and get stuck in a routine. Consequently the result is sameness. As some clever clod once said, "If you do what you always do you'll get what you've always gotten."

And it's true.

Life is about change so occasionally we have to sit down and have a good think about how our blogs (and our lives) are doing. If everything is exactly as we wish, which is rare, there's no action to take. But if things aren't perfect - maybe not sufficient visitors, could do with more subscribers, need more links, want more money and so on - then we have to make some adjustments or, unless by a freak accident, everything will plod on as before.

Now and again, as in any business, we have to find time to stand back and take stock. We have to think about new ideas and innovations that might just take our blogs (and our lives) to the next stage.

Life is development, improvement, advancement and, dare I say it, evolution.

So lets get those thinking caps on and evolve.

Mind you, stagnation has a certain appeal at times!

Updates:

TreasureTrooper. My last words about this program were that it was a waste of time joining if you lived outside of the USA. I've now received an email from them, which may be of interest to UK readers, they write:

'We have finally implemented our all new UK offer section. This means that UK members will now only see offers that are available for their country, without the hassle of wading through dozens of US offers. There's hundreds of dollars to be earned in the new section, and you'll just have to see it to believe it!'

I took a look at the site and, sure enough, there are over 50 offers said to be suitable for UK residents.

If you are in the UK (or USA) and like these sort of programs it may be worth a look. I have to admit that it's not really my thing. If you do join I would suggest that you set up a seperate email address - there's bound to be some junk mail.

I'm sure there was something else that I wanted to mention but it's gone from my mind. Now where's that thinking cap?

Good luck,
Mike.

Proof Of Making Money With Free Blogs

I was taking some of the USA money checks / cheques, that I have received from blogging, to the bank today but thought I would scan them first. In the blogosphere there is lots of hype and untruths so the checks represent some proof towards my Money Making Weekly Reports.

Okay, some of the big hitters are earning lots more money than this but I'm reasonably happy with how things have progressed with my blogging. It is after all a long distance journey and not a sprint.

I don't compare my own results with what others have done or are doing. I prefer to use my own objectives, it doesn't really matter what others are earning.

Anyway, here are the cheques. I had to do them in two scans. The money is from the FriendFinderGroup, Sexy Ads, Convergence Inc and from advertising revenue. CC Bill handle payments for numerous companies and Medley do the commission for the FriendFinderGroup.

money checks / cheques from blogging
money checks / cheques from blogging
I always bank USA checks in batches (I'm in the UK) as this saves considerably on bank charges. My bank charges me the same flat fee whether I bank one or ten cheques. It's therefore more profitable to save up foreign checks - making sure that they don't expire. Most have a life of 120 or 180 days.

I've also had various blogging payments (PayPerPost, Daytipper etc) via PayPal as per scan on right (this is about US$173 at current exchange rates).

That's a little of my proof of money making with blogging. AdSense money is paid direct into my bank account.

So there we go. It is possible to make money with free blogs and without any capital outlay.

Good luck,
Mike.

Make Money With Advertorials

It appears that sponsored posts are now generally accepted as a way to earn money with blogging. As you no doubt know you can get anything from $5 upwards for writing a sponsored post. You can even get $7.50 for writing about this post - more info here.

Now sometimes the problem can be that sponsored posts on offer may not be relative to the subject matter of your blog. I was thinking about this earlier this morning and 'ding-dong' the blatantly obvious hit me. Instead of writing sponsored posts, for other people, why not do them for yourself?

What I mean by this is to have a specific post, on your blog, about a product or service for which you are an affiliate, agent or whatever. This way there is no restriction on what you write, no rules to comply with and any money made from the post is all your own.

I thought that I would try this out - an experiment if you like - to see how this would work in reality. If you look at my previous post you will see that I have written a post about a book on making money with blogging - which is what this blog is all about.

I feel that such posts, however, should still be marked in some way to indicate that they are different from a standard post. I'm going to mark these as 'Advertorials'.

So that is my idea for today. It's pretty obvious but something that may be worth thinking about. The fact is that to make money your 'products' have to be seen and sold. Perhaps advertorials could do this for you.

Good luck,
Mike.

People Go Where Other People Go (Plus Wealth Toolbox Again!)

While on holiday in Spain my wife and I wandered around a few towns and, in doing so, noticed various restaurants and bars.

"Why is it that some are heaving with people while other restaurants are virtually empty? They all appear to look very similar," asked my wife.

Now there's a good question. Was it the food, the ambiance, the layout?

To relate this to blogging: why are some blogs heaving with visitors and others, that look fairly similar, aren't?

Partly its because people go where other people go. They shop where other people shop, they eat where other people eat, they read blog posts that other people read.

It's all about reputation and, to a degree, word of mouth and recommendation.

Unfortunately building a good reputation rarely happens overnight. It is possible to make things happen quickly, but this is in exceptional circumstances or with the aid of some first class marketing. But even these exceptions still have to build their reputation for repeat and long term business. It's no good being a flash in the pan - I do love a good cliche!

In business it's necessary to guard our reputation and build it up with honesty, fairness and as high a standard as we can possibly achieve.

We have to build our blogs and our reputations on firm foundations. Keep plodding on doing what's right and with time who knows where we may end up - providing we know where it is that we actually want to go.

So endeth todays lesson!

Now this Wealth Toolbox (again). Jason Steele, the founder, has set up a separate domain Forex Power Strategy to market his course and is offering commission of $90 for each $198 sale This was originally to be sold at $495.

Regular readers will know my opinion of the Wealth Toolbox - don't touch it with a bargepole!

Now here's something interesting. Jason Steele says he surveyed 6064 people i.e. members who had signed up with Wealth Toolbox. This means he is 'giving away' $303,200 ($50 to each member). But there's more!

As you know I joined, out of interest, and my $50 is now 'worth' $306.47. So if my account is average Mr.Steele will have to payout 6064 members @ $306.47 which totals ... $1,858,434.

Come on now - who in their right mind would give away nearly $2 million dollars? If he has that sort of money why bother messing about with an affiliate scheme? Answers on a postcard ...

Good luck,
Mike.

Money Making Weekly Report - Week 33

Holiday over!

After two weeks of sunshine, sea and whatever the third 's' is, it's good to be back to blogging - huh!

Whatever, I thought I'd better do a quick Money Making Report as I haven't completed one while away. It'll be an abbreviated version and I'll hopefully get back to normal next week.

checks Adult Friend FinderI'll start off as usual with money. As you'll see from the two cheques on the right I've had money again from the FriendFinder Group plus some via PayPal. Note than when dating checks/cheques the USA puts the month first, whereas in the UK we enter the day first. I mention this as it's often queried.

Here's an update:

Money
I have removed Commission Junction from my list, though the money received has been included in my totals. I do not want to give them any more publicity. My CJ post refers.

* indicates payments have been received over the last two weeks.

AdSense $223.27*
Amazon UK £1.84

Lots of Ways On How To Make Money

Way To Make Money

This is a longish post with some money making ideas, not necessarily to do with blogging or the Internet. It's a mixed bag, in no particular order. It's surprising what you can come up with when you try. You never know, something in the post might just get you thinking.

Money With Free Blogs.
Well I had to start with this one, didn't I? And in doing so I'll take the easy way out and refer you to my three posts on this subject. How To Make Money With Free Blogs - Part 1, Part 2 and Part 3.

Making Money With Your Signature.
No I don't mean by selling your autograph! This is a tip I got from the knowledgeable Tom a while back (his blog AdSense4Dummies is an interesting read).

The signatures are those shown at the bottom of forum comments. Yes, they can be rented out for about $10 a month - subject to certain conditions etc. You need to be an established member of a forum with lots of comments under your belt and be in the habit of using the forum regularly.

Since I've been aware of this money making idea I've also seen bloggers who rent out the avatar on their forum posts as well. See a Digital Point thread where a signature is being auctioned here.

Profit From Real Signatures - Autographs!
Madonna autograph photoI know someone who buys autographed photos and then sells reproductions of these on eBay and by other methods on the Internet. She makes up to £1250 ($2500) per month.

Yes, she has to spend to buy the original autographs but once purchased she has them for life - to sell over and over again. She buys them over the Internet, usually from abroad. The logic being that, for example, a USA star's autographed photo costs less in the USA than it does in the UK or other parts of the world. I have dabbled in this market myself - see below.

For examples of Madonna's Autographed photos (including one nude) please see my blog Madonna Photos.

Sell Links
Obviously if you can sell forum signatures you can also sell your links as well. The amount paid is relative to your PageRank - the higher it is the more you can ask. Again Digital Point has a forum for this. This is one of the reasons to strive for a decent PR.

Advertising.
If you've got a blog, or web site, you might as well monetise it, even if the result is that you simply cover your Internet costs. I've covered this subject here so I won't repeat what has already been said. I'll just say that the most popular way to get ads on your blog or website is with Google AdSense - but remember you must comply with their Terms & Conditions. Fall foul of these and you could be cut off in your prime - which isn't a very pleasant thought!

Cherished Car Number Plates - UK Market.
Take a look at the motoring section of magazines such as Exchange and Mart, or do a search, and you'll discover a wealth of car number plates offered to discerning drivers. Prices range from £100 or so, for a number a little out of the ordinary, to something like £50,000 for a plate that spells a name.

When you look into this business you'll find several dealers are selling the same number plate. What they are doing is acting as agents for the owner of the vehicle currently bearing the number plate. They are working on a commission basis - so no big outlay involved.

All that is really required to start up is government information regarding the transfer of number plates and the cost of advertising.

Writing Newsletters.
Newsletters are in great demand amongst many varied groups of people, ranging from collectors to mail order dealers, opportunity seekers, fan club members, sixty music fans and so on.

As individuals such people carry out their interests in isolation deprived of the assistance and benefits of group membership. Someone who can bring together such people, and their interests, via weekly, monthly, bi-monthly newsletters must surely stand to make a very handsome profit. And all for what essentially amounts to writing up simple, but informative, newsletters for distribution to members.

Publishing With Reproduction & Resell Rights.
Staying on a similar theme as the last entry, this is about selling information to the public, irrespective of whether or not the information has been personally written by the publisher or purchased from outside sources.

When I published my magazines I also sold various manuals on 'how to' subjects. I purchased some of these initially with reproduction and resell rights. All I then had to do was advertise them and photocopy the material when I received orders.

Believe me, the 'how to' business is massive. We all have some knowledge that others may want. Write about this and then sell it over and over for years and years. It takes some initial effort but, once set up, it's something to sell for life (with only perhaps occasional updating). If you can't do this yourself you'll find lots of subject matter on the Internet including eZines, guides and the like that you can reproduce for profit. A first class money maker.

Specialised Greetings Cards.
Greetings Cards seem to be all very similar. I bet at Christmas you get loads that look alike. So wouldn't it be nice if you could get a card for a loved one, or on a special occasion, which is unique and different from the norm? This is a service that could be set up using DTP or by craft workers and those of an artistic bent.

House Sitting/Minding.
More and more people feel uneasy about leaving their homes unattended while they are on holiday or on business trips. This is a niche that could produce profits. An example of this is the service offered by Guardian Angels.

They also want 'angels' to house sit details here. It is however something that anyone could set up in their own area and might be ideal for someone retired.

Boarding Pets.
Follows on from the last entry. If you are an animal lover what could be more perfect that looking after dogs, cats and other creatures while their owners are away. The service could either be offered in the owners home or, if you have the space, at your own house. People do worry about their precious pets so why not exploit the market!

Jewellery Making.
This opportunity can range from making and selling inexpensive jewellery, to producing custom designed or novelty items. Whatever quality or speciality one opts for, will determine the method of sale. Lower cost and gimmicky items might best be reserved for craft fairs, party plan, car boots sales or in bulk to local shops.

Higher quality items might be created to customers' specifications or else could be produced specifically for sale on a commission basis in local craft and jewellers shops, at craft fairs, trade fairs - the opportunities are endless! Kate runs an interesting blog about making and selling jewellery. There are several useful articles.

Pattern Designer.
My wife makes and designs dresses, though not so much nowadays. She has lots of patterns of dresses she has made in the past and also of stuffed animals, like teddy bears, that she also used to enjoy making. The thing here is that many people can't make patterns for all sorts of craft work themselves. This includes such things as knitting, sewing, embroidery, tapestry, quilting and so on. If you can make the patterns for the craft workers then there are pounds, dollars, euros to be made.

Affiliate Programs.
Go here for the low down on making money with affiliate programs. All you need is a blog and away you go!

Growing And Selling Mushrooms.
An easy enough task for anyone with a small area in which to house shelf upon shelf of compost in which the mushrooms are grown. Mushrooms actually 'grow' themselves, with very little outside assistance. There are many complete kits and manuals available about growing this high demand commodity.

Sell at markets, car boot sales, to shops. Have a Mushrooms For Sale sign outside your house (if not against any bye laws) and sell direct to passers by and neighbours.

Growing And Selling Plants.
This is another easy cottage industry. Anyone with the slightest tinge of green to their fingers can take cuttings. I do this myself with fuchsias. They are so easy to grow. Pick off a newish shoot, pop it in water until it has some roots and then stick it in a pot. Job done. Now look at what a nursery will charge for similar plants. Cuttings = profit. There is a host of place where they can be sold. Lots of plants are easy to take cuttings from. Hydrangea for example - expensive to buy but easy to grow.

Tips & Donations
It is possible that, if you provide some interesting information on a blog visitors may leave you a donation or tip.

There is one famous example of this - Jason Kottke. The story goes that in the early part of 2005 he decided to quit his employment to take up being a professional blogger for one year.

His blog doesn't offer any form of service or product, and there is no advertising on the blog. His income, I'm told, is purely from donations. In February of 2006 Jason revealed that roughly 1450 micropatrons had donated over US$39,900 over the course of his one year experiment.

This is an exceptional example. Jason was already a well established blogger prior to requesting donations. However even a few tips might just come in handy. You don’t get if you don’t ask.

PayPal offer proper donation buttons and make it easy for visitors to donate or leave a tip. I always run a couple of these buttons on my own blog.

Teaching.
I don't mean in schools or colleges but simply passing on some knowledge that you have to other people. I'll mention my wife again here. She's a dressmaker so a few years back she decided to teach this to a few friends and their friends and ... so on.

I know someone who teaches yoga and has made lots of cash. Get a class of thirty all paying you £x or $x and you have a good income for a couple of hours work but, if you held lessons most days and evenings ... loads of money!

If you have a skill or knowledge use it, profit from it and don't hide your light under a bushel - what is a bushel anyway?

Making Friends & Contacts - Over 18's Only.
It can be a lonely old world and this is why there are lots of agencies, magazines and websites dedicated to bringing people together, whether this be for romance, friendship or adult relationships.

I used to publish penfriend and contact magazines for about ten years alongside my business opportunity magazine. It's a profitable business to get in to. You can read some of my experiences here. Of course, nowadays, it's all mostly done on the Internet. As regular readers will know from my blog I'm an affiliate for the FriendFinder Group and also SexyAds. They have both made money for me.

The mentioned affiliate programs have plenty of back up, pay out on time and I have had no problems with them. The question is: Are they compatible to your blog or websites? If they are, give them a go!

Sex - Over 18's Only.
I don't mean selling your body! Sex is a private thing and that is why retailing products for adults is so successful by mail order or on the Internet. It's the sort of thing that a lot of people would be too embarrassed to purchase in a shop but they may be interested over the anonymity of the Internet or through the mail.

One company that will give you a free adult website is Convergence Inc. Commission is then made on any sales on your site. Needless to say this is for readers over the age of 18 only. Please do not click on the link if you are under age.

Re-conditioned Jumpers & Sweaters
This is one I remember from visiting a car boot (trunk) sale. One woman purchased sweaters, jumpers, cardigans etc. from Jumble Sales, where prices are extremely low, and resold them at car boot sales. She washed all of the garments, pressed them and folded them neatly into plastic bags so that they looked new - though she didn't fib and sell them as such.

Each item was priced reasonably but not too cheap. If you sell things at rock bottom prices often customers don't see the items as being of value.

She tried, whenever possible, to buy 'named' garments - either designer or big store names. There were usually lots of people round her stall looking and buying.

Selling Paper Ephemera.
Ephemera is the fancy name given to paper collectibles: tickets, adverts, magazines, leaflets, old bill heads, letterheads etc. The older the item often the more collectible the item - though this doesn't always follow. Rarity is the main thing to look for.

These items are always in demand by collectors at fairs, flea markets, antique fairs and through the mail or on eBay. See my full article on ephemera: Making Money From Printed Memorabilia & Ephemera

Writing Letters To The Press.
Here lies a potentially lucrative opportunity. Most magazines and newspapers offer cash rewards for readers letters, jokes, anecdotes, recipes and so on. Study the target publication carefully to see what is required. Some publications prefer short, snappy letters: some choose family orientated subjects or other niche readers. Make sure that you know the sort of material wanted and have a go!

Leaflet & Flyer Distribution.
Many firms and businesses advertise their services by means of flyers and brochures delivered to defined areas. Now a proper, reliable leaflet distributor dealing with several clients at the same time can offer a good service at a reasonable cost.

The secret is to deliver several flyers etc for different clients at the same time. You can advertise your services locally or nationwide. Prices are about £40 per 1000 leaflets delivered - see example website for London area who offers such a service.

Big Mails.
I did something similar to the above leaflet distribution when I published magazines but through the post. I used to mail out what are known as Big Mails. These are simply circulars from various sources that are all included in one envelope.

I always packed the envelope full to the relevant weight to make it profitable. At the time I remember I could get 10 A4 circulars in one envelope for a second class stamp. It may be different now.

I also included circulars for businesses when I mailed out my magazines. Why waste any free weight when you can get paid to pop in a couple of extra circulars.

Your Own Internet Shop.
Do you fancy having you own shop or store on the Internet and all for free? All you need to do is to get visitors to your shop - perhaps by promoting this on your blog.

Setting up a shop is quite straightforward and is really simply an extension of being an affiliate. The companies concerned, who offer the service, do virtually everything for you. There is no need to have any knowledge of HTML as the website layouts, for your shop, are all ready set up.
You normally have a choice of goods with which to stock your shop. Again this is all for free and costs nothing to set up.

A few companies who offer to set you up with a free shop or store include:

Amazon: with their aStore.
Zlio: big range of products.
SexToySex: adult products (over 18’s only).

There are many other examples. Do a search and you will find lots more.

Childrens' Entertainer.
Okay not for everyone! If you have children and want to throw a birthday party get in the professionals: clowns, magicians, puppeteers, jugglers etc. They can entertain the kids while you take a break. Only, in this instance, I'm talking about you becoming the entertainer. I mean how difficult can it be! I guess you have to actually like children and not mind making a fool of yourself.

Old Photographic Views.
Sometimes called photo antiques. In this case the idea is to sell photographic reproductions of old street and village scenes or pictures of local interest. Original photos and even postcards of such views are becoming increasingly expensive. This is where reproductions fill the void. In relation to the potential, the price of the original is relatively low for the 'reproducer'. The photos can be sold framed or unframed. London Under Fire - WW2 Photos

It's all so easy to do nowadays with modern printers and scanners.

Surveys.
It's true that there are a lot of scams involving surveys but there are a few good ones. If you like completing surveys and polls one genuine company is You Gov. They are looking for people from UK, USA and the Middle East for their panels. Payments are made for completing surveys. It's not big money but it is extra cash. They also offer payments for introducing new members to their panels.

Get Writing.
If you look around the Internet there are several websites that will pay you for writing articles. An example of this is Helium. They share profits based on advertising on article pages. At the time of writing this they also have weekly prizes ranging from $5 to $300 in addition to standard earnings. To make money you need to write quite a few articles and it also helps if you can promote these on blogs, forums and so on.

Sponsored Posts.
If you have a blog then consider writing sponsored posts. You get paid a set fee for writing such a post based on various subjects and to specifications as set down by the websites concerned. The following websites offer sponsored posts. PayPerPost, Blogitive and Review Me. There are also many others. Blogs need to be of a certain standard to qualify for sponsored blogs. See requirements of the mentioned websites - they vary.

Unfortunately that's my time up! There are lots more money making ideas. It's really a matter of sitting down and brainstorming and then seeing if you can find more info on the Internet.

Good luck,
Mike.
