Make Money With Bubble Gum Wrappers!

It's a sunny Easter Sunday but I've managed to escape for a short while to write a quick post.

Sometimes I think the world has gone mad what with Political Correctness and Human Rights taken to the extreme. Of course they are both honourable things but it's all getting a little silly nowadays - oh and then there is the price of bubble gum wrappers!

For example, did you realise that a Mars Attacks bubble gum wrapper, from 1962, will sell for at least £100 ($180)? Now can that be right?

The world of ephemera, or printed memorabilia, has interested me for a long time and I have dabbled in dealing with such things over the years. It's a market that covers everything from those bubble gum wrappers to old magazines, photos, football programmes and so on. The fact is there are money making possibilities with paper items that most people would normally throw away. Perhaps a good niche here for eBay sellers.

Anyway, there are Easter Eggs to be eaten and people to see so I'd better finish before I get into trouble with my wife. It's a gathering of the clans tonight. For a little more info on ephemera, and indeed bubble gum wrappers, see my post Making Money From Printed Memorabilia & Ephemera on one of my other blogs.

Good luck,
Mike.

Good Friday Link Love

'One hundred and eighty', the top score with three darts on a UK dart board. Not that it's really relevant other than this is also my 180th blog post. So, on such an auspicious occasion, and it also being Good Friday, it's got to be some more Link Love ...

I'll start with Happy Birthright Day - Bring Your BIG Goals! from the blog called Passion Meets Purpose.

We are offered this advice: 'Claim your birthright. Grab your higher-self by the hand and walk the line. Walk it one day at a time. One beautiful, quirky, eloquent, awkward, funny, heartbreaking, simple, chaotic, silly, chilly, sizzling, dynamic moment at a time. Choose to live as a deliberate creator of your reality.'

'Mmmmm okay,' you may say but Kammie writes well on such subjects and, if it's your cup of tea, pop along and have a read. I enjoyed her site. Why is the blog called Passion Meets Purpose? Well it's because, 'Living passionately and on purpose means knowing who you are and what you value.'

Next we have What are my daily success habits? from Creation Thoughts.

Wendy was set the challenge to write about: '...things you do almost every day that help you to be successful. They can be anything at all, but they have to be things you do at least 4 or 5 times every week.' And that's just what she has done, ten of them. See if you agree with her tips for success.

Third is The 5 Minute Management Course from esofthub's web finds.

Six lessons here, but they are funny illustrations. A couple I had heard before but they still made me smile - and this is something I feel we should do more of. Have you noticed how miserable looking most people are when they are in a queue, for instance?

And now to cheer us up Don't Come Monday - You're A Blogger And You Are FIRED from the Million Dollar Experiment Down Under.

Rob tells us about some, 'bloggers who have been fired for expressing their views on their Blogs.' So be careful what you write. Rob's conclusion is that, 'you really need to be very careful to leave your employer out of your blog altogether, you never know what might be interpreted as unacceptable so its best to err on the side of caution!'

And finally Subscribe to our Feed Contest from Blog About Your Blog.

There is a prize up for grabs - a mini fridge. Matt thinks, 'It’s pretty cool (groan). Something fun to win!' Use the link to read the full info.

My good causes/charity this week is Cancer Research UK. They are the UK's leading charity dedicated to cancer research. Their websites have a wealth of information about cancer, research, how to donate and other ways to support the charity.

Good luck,
Mike.

Make Money With Free Blogs - Part 3

Part 1
We talked mainly about Blog Content and retaining visitors with a few extras thrown in.

Part 2
The primary subject was about getting visitors to your blog.

So far, therefore, we have the formula:

Post content of value > Attract visitors > Keep visitors on your blog > Make them want to return

Now it’s time to actually Make Money and Monetise your Blog.

So where do you start? The most popular ways are:

1. Affiliate Programs
2. Shops
3. Advertisements
4. Sponsored Posts
5. Tips
6. Own products

Lets look at these in a little more detail:

1. Affiliate Programs.
There are a host of affiliate programs whereby a blogger can earn money by promoting all sorts of products and services. Payment for doing this is usually as (a) a percentage of the sale, (b) a flat fee or (c) per click. Affiliate schemes vary in the ways by which you can make money.

It all sounds very easy. You simply put their ads or information on your blog, maybe mention them on forums and do whatever else you can think of to get some clicks and/or sales.

There are hundreds and hundreds of websites wanting affiliates. The problem can sometimes be as to where to actually start looking. One solution is to join the likes of Commission Junction, TradeDoubler or ClickBank who are each associated with hundreds of affiliate programs.

You pick out the programs that interest you and any commissions you make will be paid via CJ, TradeDoubler or ClickBank. This cuts out dealing with lots of different individual affiliate schemes.

Affiliate programs are successful because your visitors are already interested in the subject matter (otherwise he or she would not be browsing your blog) and so will be drawn to the products shown. This is, of course, providing that you match the affiliate programs you join with the subject matter of your blog.

For lists of individual affiliate programs, in categories, try: AffiliateGuide or Affiliate Scout or do a Search.

As you will have seen from my Money Making Weekly Reports I have made money with the likes of the FriendFinderGroup and with Personal Ads. I also did well with Commission Junction initially.

Affiliate marketing gets you your share of the multi-million eCommerce business without any risk or cost. How else could you get associated with, and make money from, such big names as Amazon, eBay and many, many other big brand names. Once you start looking you may well be surprised at some of the famous company names that may want you as an affiliate.

There is one aspect of affiliate marketing that many bloggers overlook. This is that you can sometimes also refer others to the program and, in doing so, make money on the sales that these introductions achieve. The commission isn't huge, normally 5% or 10%, but it all adds up, especially if you can refer several people.

2. Shops.
Do you fancy having you own shop or store on the Internet and all for free? All you need to do is to get visitors to your shop - perhaps by promoting this on your blog. It is all easier said than done - getting the traffic, that is - but it can be achieved.

Setting up a shop is quite straightforward and is really simply an extension of being an affiliate. The companies concerned, who offer the service, do virtually everything for you. There is no need to have any knowledge of HTML as the website layouts, for your shop, are all ready set up.

You normally have a choice of goods with which to stock your shop. Again this is all for free and costs nothing to set up.

A few companies who offer to set you up with a free shop or store include:
Amazon: with their aStore.
Zlio: big range of products.
SexToySex: adult products (over 18’s only).
cafepress: t-shirts, posters, mugs, bumper stickers
eCrater: all sorts of products.
DIY Dating: worldwide dating

The above are purely examples. There are dozens of other places that will set you up with a free shop - seek and you will find! One point I would add is that you will find some websites who may request payment for setting up a shop. Personally I wouldn't go down this route unless (a) you have good recommendations that this is a genuine offer and (b) you are sure you can produce sufficient traffic to make it viable. Before parting with any money get experience with the freebie shops.

3. Advertisements
Unless you have been blogging blindfolded you will have seen adverts in various formats on blogs. The most seen are probably Google AdSense whereby bloggers are paid varying amounts per click. The only slight drawback, for the smaller blogger, is that it is necessary to accumulate $100 of earnings before you actually receive payment.

I suggest that prior to adding AdSense on your blog you read the Terms & Conditions and also their Progam Policies. Don’t ignore these otherwise any earnings accrued might be in jeopardy. You must not, for instance, use Hit Exchanges such as Blog Explosion, Blog Mad etc. to drive traffic to your blog.

Obey the rules and also read up on Optimization Tips to get the best return out of your ads. The diagram shows, what AdSense considers to be, the best placement for your ads - the darker the colour the better the position - in theory anyway. There’s loads of info on their website to help you make AdSense a success.

There are also numerous other places that will set you up with ads on your blog.

Other sites that will help you make money from adspace include:
AdBrite
Oxado
Bidvertiser
Clicksor
ExoClick

Note: If you are thinking of using other advertising alongside AdSense, on your blog, make sure that this is compatible with their rules. For example AdSense write: 'We do not permit Google ads or search boxes to be published on websites that also contain other ads or services formatted to use the same layout and colors as the Google ads or search boxes on that site.'

4. Sponsored Posts
Once your blog is established you can make money by writing sponsored posts. For doing this you get paid a fee for writing the post, on a set topic, and publishing this on your blog. The post must normally remain on your blog for at least 30 days - though terms vary.

Websites offering money for writing sponsored posts include:
PayPerPost (which I have used)
Blogitive
Review Me
LoudLaunch

I have found PayPerPost to be easy to use and they have always paid me on time to date.

5. Donations & Tips
Yes, it is possible that, if you provide some interesting information, visitors to your blog may leave you a donation or tip.

There is one famous example of this - Jason Kottke. The story goes that in the early part of 2005 he decided to quit his employment to take up being a professional blogger for one year.

His blog doesn't offer any form of service or product, and there is no advertising on the blog. His income, I'm told, is purely from donations. In February of 2006 Jason revealed that roughly 1450 micropatrons had donated over US$39,900 over the course of his one year experiment.

This is an exceptional example. Jason was already a well established blogger prior to requesting donations. However even a few tips might just come in handy. You don’t get if you don’t ask.

PayPal offer proper donation buttons and make it easy for visitors to donate or leave a tip. I always run a couple of these buttons on my own blog.

6. Your Own Products
Now this is something I haven’t done myself as yet. I feel you need to be reasonably established and with good traffic before venturing down this path. It is, however, the method used by many big hitters.

Products such as eZines and information are probably the easiest route. Whatever you sell, providing your products match your visitors profile, you could be on to a winner.

With cafepress you can have your own range of t-shirts, posters, mugs and bumper stickers and they do all of the work.

Own products could be the future for bloggers.

That is Part 3 completed. So we have now added to our formula:

Post content of value > Attract visitors > Keep visitors on your blog > Make them want to return> Monetise your blog ...

The circle is complete but it never ends because, once you Monetise your blog, you are back to > Posting content of value ... and so on.

Good luck,
Mike.

The Lighter & Darker Shades Of Blogging

Sometimes we can take all of this blogging and money making business much too seriously. It was good, therefore, to see a couple of April 1st jokes in posts.

Firstly Rhys had us going with his Wikipedia entry. I remember reading a while back that it was one of his ambitions to be included in Wikipedia and it looks like he's now managed this - sort of!

Then there was Kumiko with her naughty post about her sexy new site that raised the temperature (and perhaps hopes) of many of her male readers. She very cleverly used this the following day as a marketing tool for an affiliate program.

Moving on:
It looks like Big Brother is now with us. SunSat Satellite Solutions Co claim they can track most mobile phones.

They write that they use a ...

'GSM mobile phone tracking system via the GPS-TRACK satellite network. Based on repeater triangulation, the system tracks mobile phones using GPS and GSM technology.

Approximate margin of error:

10 meters (max.) for mobile phones in Europe and the U.K.
25 meters (max.) for mobile phones in the U.S.A., South America and Canada.
50 meters (max.) for mobile phones elsewhere.
This system will not work in countries without GSM technology networks.'

We are being watched all the time and now anyone can trace our phones as well. Mustn't tell my wife about this!

Only a quick post today as I've a mountain of other stuff to get through. See you tomorrow.

Good luck,
Mike.

Worldwide Blogging - But 95% Of Us Don't Have A Blog

We keep reading about the number of blogs that are in existence. I've seen figures suggested of between 50 and even 200 million and everyone seems to marvel at this fact.

However there is another way of looking at things:

For whatever figure is bandied about the fact remains that about 95% of the world population don't have a blog at the moment. If we see things from this angle it stresses the real potential of blogging. There is still a massive market out there waiting to be conquered - and a lot of money to be made!

I've written before about how we have to look at blogging from a worldwide perspective and not as a localised project. Sure there will be blogs for local things, of interest to local readers only but most have the potential to be reached by people from all over the world.

A friend researched the following figures. As to how accurate these are I have no idea, they could all be a figment of his fertile imagination for all I know! I reckon the real truth, as to the number of blogs, is very difficult to ascertain and even more difficult to break down into specific countries. Anyway, for what it's worth:
    Australia: approx 410,000 blogs
    Austria: approx 22,000
    Belgium: approx 105,000
    Brunei: approx 3,500
    Canada: approx 750,000
    China: approx 5.5 million
    Croatia: approx 45,000
    Czech: approx 5,500
    Denmark: approx 5,500
    Finland: approx 110,000
    France: approx 3.5 million
    Germany: approx 300,000
    India: approx 120,000
    Ireland: approx 79,000
    Israel: approx 110,000
    Italy: approx 220,000
    Japan: approx 4.4 million
    Malaysia: approx 12,000
    Netherlands: approx 650,000
    Philippines: approx 80,000
    Poland: approx 1.6 million
    Russia: approx 330,000
    South Korea: approx 15 million
    Spain: 1.7 million
    Ukraine: 55,000
    UK: 2.8 million
    United States: approx 15-30 million

Treat the above as purely entertainment value!

From my own point of view, it's interesting that for a long time my stats showed that my main visitors originated from the UK and USA - often as high as 85%. This is now altering with a shift towards more Asian visitors. UK and USA visitors presently make up 65% of my visitors with Asia now having risen to 15%.

I guess all of this just means: Think worldwide when considering affiliate and advertising programs.

Good luck,
Mike.

20 Websites To Syndicate Your Articles & Get you Links

I received an email from Anders Sparre of Helium telling me that Helium is now included on Commission Junction. Okay, so CJ aren't exactly my favourite people, but this information may be of interest to others.

Helium and other similar websites like Triond are programs whereby you can submit articles and get paid a small commission for doing so. With Triond the articles must be original and not published elsewhere.

Making money from articles is fine but sometimes it can be of more value if they can gain links, and therefore traffic, to your blog instead.

There are lots of websites that can help you do this - and in many cases it's okay if your articles have been published elsewhere.

This is very much like organised link baiting.

You submit your articles to the websites (there are 20 listed below) and once approved these are published. Once published they can then be copied by any website or blog who are looking for content. The important point is, that when they are copied, they must include a footnote and link to your own blog as well. You, therefore, get links and hopefully traffic as well.

Of course this is all dependent on your article and it's subject matter. Some articles may not get syndicated in this way. It's necessary to write about subjects which you think other site owners may want to copy and publish.

As you will no doubt have realised, these sites have another value besides getting you links. They can also provide you with free content for your own blog if you get stuck for something to publish.

Here is a list of twenty websites that will syndicate your articles.

Give a couple a try and see how you get on. The thing is, you never know who may take a liking to your article. Plus a good article may have a viral effect and spread from blog to blog or website to website. You never know in life what can happen.

Good luck,
Mike.
